Source Water Protection

August 6, 2007 marked the beginning of HFCA’s participation in the Source Water Protection Technical Assistance Program (SWP TAP) that is administered by PA Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP). The HFCA SWP Steering Committee initially met with DEP to talk about getting licensed hydro-geologists that are contracted by PA DEP to locate and map the aquifer(s) that supply our drinking water and develop a plan that protects our drinking water. Future meetings will further define what HFCA wants from the program and how the hydro-geologists can meet our needs.
The October 2, 2007 meeting of the Source Water Protection (SWP) Committee was lively and productive. HFCA received a draft of the proposal that was submitted to Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) by Spotts, Stevens and McCoy for the HFCA Source Water Protection Plan. The proposal includes a delineation of the aquifer(s) that supply our drinking water and ways to protect from contamination. Committee members reviewed the proposal to determine if all the elements would meet our needs in the timeframe established by DEP. Several items were presented by the committee to DEP for consideration prior to their approval of the proposal. The committee also expects input on the proposal from our consulting geologist Dick Wright.
